Spring
time means more activity on the roads - Bikes and Pedestrians are out
enjoying the warmer weather and that means that they are sharing the
roads with motorists. Please be mindful of Safe Driving Practices
and remember the Rules of the Road.
The
following sections are taken from the Motor
Vehicle Act:
Motorists
Every
driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with
any pedestrian upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding
the horn when necessary and shall exercise proper precautions upon
observing any child or any confused or incapacitated person upon a
roadway.
Pedestrians
Where
sidewalks
are provided it is unlawful for any pedestrian to travel along or
upon an adjacent roadway. Where sidewalks are not provided any
pedestrians travelling along or upon a highway shall, when
practicable, travel only on the extreme left side of the roadway or
its shoulder, not more than two abreast, facing traffic which may
approach from the opposite direction and shall give way to the left
to traffic approaching on the roadway.
Bicycles
Every
person
operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right
side of the roadway as practicable, exercising due care when passing
a standing vehicle or one proceeding in the same direction. Persons
riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride abreast except on paths
or parts of roadways set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles.
Wherever a usable path for bicycles has been provided adjacent to a
roadway, bicycle riders shall use such path and shall not use the
roadway.
All
municipal streets have a maximum speed limit of 50 km/hr unless
posted otherwise. Please
drive carefully!
